4/19

This quarter is quite something. Bec is in St Louis for the weekend, and I am putting together a proposal for a seminar paper on verbal description of art in ancient literature. We looked at some pillows last night, for the registry. Bec divulged her recovery from an addiction to pretty decorative pillows that she's hitherto managed to conceal due to 'highly evasive skills'. Evidently, many pillows from her former period of dependency are now hidden beneath her childhood bed in St Louis. That is perfectly and horrifyingly freudian if you think about it. I have yet to tell her about my tea-cosy fetish. Lord grant me the serenity...

Fondant is not as gross as I thought it would be

This is my first post on Will & Becky. Last weekend the two of us went to St Louis, in part to look at wedding cakes. The lady, Helen, seemed very accommodating, not that our ideas for the cake are so terribly particular or anything. Her portfolio had some very baroque examples that were rather impressive, although I couldn't imagine having anything like that for one's wedding. They were so theatrical. And yet, it was comforting somehow to imagine that even if we were to be unreasonable and demand the moon, she would know exactly what we needed and graciously bake it for us. Also, we brought home two samplings of assorted cake/filling combinations, with liqueurs, raspberry, buttercream, marzipan, etc. which were so good. We've narrowed the selection down to three favorites, one of which is a lemon-poppy-seed confection that is very good, very lemony. We also went to a ball-game and heard Beethoven's Fidelio that evening. A very fruitful expedition. Many things learned, many things learned indeed.
